Australia, NSW - Northern Rivers Community Choir-Voices on Fire, Chris James, Presbyterian Church hall in Keen St Lismore, 11 May 2016

Lismore’s rich artistic diversity has struck a new chord with the formation of community choir “Voices On Fire”. Conducted by internationally renowned musician, Chris James, the choir brings together people from all walks of life and of all ages to celebrate the magic of song.

Using skills and experiences gleaned from over 20 years of experience in Australia and abroad, Chris brings a unique approach to choir. A central tenant of the “Voices On Fire” choir is that everyone has a natural voice. “The voice with which we were born, is naturally in tune, free flowing and clear of emotional restrictions.”

The choir sessions explore the relationship between body and voice. In subtle and gentle ways, Chris encourages the choir to relax and move with the music. “Only when our bodies are relaxed, will our natural voices flow.”

While the primary benefit of the choir is to make music, choristers can experience the relationship between singing, their bodies, and their overall mental and physical health.

Many participants have never sung in a choir before. As one participant noted “I never realised I could sing this well. It is so energising and freeing.” Friendship and fellowship is a natural outcome of singing together. A group of individuals arrives and a choir leaves, such is the power of singing with one voice.

The choir is accompanied by a group of dedicated and highly accomplished musicians. This adds immensely to the fun and the amazing sound produced.

The repertoire covers a range of styles. Many original works composed by Chris and his wife Jennifer are also performed. In addition to set works, Chris employs a number of techniques to tune and develop the choir. These include entertaining vocal exercises and haunting chants. Each week is an adventure and exploration into the use of voice.

The result is nothing short of amazing. From a seemingly rag tag group of individuals explodes music of range, power and warmth. You can experience this first hand as a member of the public when the choir takes to the stage for its first public performance on Anzac Day at Peace Park. Can’t wait? Join the choir now.

The choir is open to all comers! No matter your age, background or experience. There are no auditions and nothing scary. Just turn up and find your true voice.

The choir meets every two weeks in the Presbyterian Church hall in Keen St starting at 7.00pm by donation.
