Hello friends of intentional music and sound;

In light of the dramatic re-emergence of American power politics and blame, definitions of SOUND catch my attention. The adjective, SOUND, is defined as “based on truth or right.” The noun, SOUND, is “an auditory impression or noise without meaning.” These definitions make me scratch my head and wonder what about my current relationship to sound. As societal shifts intensify, I’ve been thinking a lot about relevance and soundwork.

Set against the backdrop of sociological, economic and environmental urgencies, I find this ‘relevance’ question burning deeply within. One of the reasons I’m honored to be a featured author with Sound Travels, is the opportunity to engage in dialogue with sound and music thought-leaders outside the American purview.

As a dedicated soundworker, I now look to broader considerations around sound. As a founding member of the US-based Sound and Music Alliance, I question my colleagues about what does it mean to be a professional soundworker? Is it enough to have a professional license and adhere to a professional code of ethics? What is our responsibility, as professionals, to make a difference in today’s challenging world?

Can we be guardians of sound and man-made frequencies? Can we step up and champion positive sound awareness? How will we be an effective force within cultures that are re-arranging? Where are the windows of opportunity and how and where does this sound community play a vital role in the world of 2010 and 2020?

Political activism, community awareness, sustainability (inner and outer), health and balance, love for others and ourselves, 2-leggeds and 4-leggeds!

These are the questions and considerations on my sound plate these days. I look forward to being a part of a social movement in which sound awareness (in varied manifestations) is important. After all, who thinks more about vibration and frequency than soundworkers?

I look forward to hearing from you! After all, there is really only one of us here. How can we use sound and music so ‘here’ is a very cool place to be?

Much to think about… Much to discuss.

Come join me.

Hi Joshua

I do agree. I think we have to hold a much higher responsibility than we do currently in terms of how sound is used in our world. Today we have technology overload to all senses and to our environment. It is permeating into the silence too, so that the special places some like to go to in nature are even being bombarded.
At the same time we have to acknowledge that it is human nature to learn by experiment and many humans learn by their mistakes. On a global and economic level this has profound consequences.....but it is part of our evolution. We are indeed one, but we are also slightly differing frequencies in our daily lives and this is also to teach each other.
So when we start to take responsibility for sound, are we simply enforcing our understanding at that point in time onto a person, place, group or global mandate ,without understanding that in order for the collective to understand about sound and vibration, they have their journey with it too? Be it harmful or positive? The societal shifts are in response to human energy shifts, Vibrational shifts occurring within each of us and the planet as we evolve.
As sound healers we help to bring that awareness, but should we stop a persons experience of something potentially harmful? Are we then trying to play God and stop that persons own soul experience? This is always the dilemma I find in societal decision making. In the UK we have a new government wishing to give us power back, but in doing that there are also consequences. The vibration of the UK as a country right now, is very dense, yet there is also light and hope amongst those who can hold that. Our shifts are necessary and we have to go with them.
Who exactly should hold responsibility for believing it all needs to be altered? This is a planetary energetic change the world is going through and we also have to learn to be in the moment of it and move with it. When we resonate in higher vibrations above it, we can move through without being part of it, however can we then help and identify with those who come to us for help?
I believe in order to help and be responsible, we continue to bring what each of us uniquely holds in our own soundscape, accept that our paths may lead to the same place but we get there differently, bring a collective voice into the global arena with complete understanding that the consequences of any intervention made into another culture may not be as hoped. The west sees it one way, the east sees it another, the north and south have another view. Thinking too much can cloud issues, listening to the heart and then allowing the head in, gives us a clearer understanding of dealing with Vibrational issues.
