Although pop music prodigies are not common, and often one can already hear the death knells ringing under the sounds of a 16-year-old artist's debut record, sometimes musical genius arrives in young packages. New Zealander Hollie Smith is arguably one of those artistic lightning strikes. She made her recording debut in 1999, at 16 years old, with the Celtic music record Light from a Distant Shore.

About this project: For three days we sang with a loving and vibrant live audience in the sacred space of Portland Insight Meditation Center in Portland, Oregon, in August 2006. The birth of this project was a beautiful convergence of grace-filled events, emerging from our desire to share the energy of live chanting with our international kirtan family. Along with our beloved spirit sister Gina Sala, we united to co-create a powerful experience of deep spirit and incredible heart. • Madjid Khaladj :
Born at Qazvin (Iran) in 1962, Madjid Khaladj started to study the Tombak or Zarb at the age of seven. A traditional musician, accomplished teacher and player of many instruments, he is unanimously acclaimed as a master of Iranian percussion.
Among those he has played with are: Hossein Alizadeh, Dariush Tala'i and Hossein Omoumi. He pursues many activities on an international scale: festivals, concerts, conferences, film music (notably with Ry Cooder and Lisa Gerrard).
His music has taken him to the four corners of the world: in Europe, the USA and Japan, where he has played with such celebrated percussionists as Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain and Doudou N'diaye Rose.

• A Teaching Method :
Madjid Khaladj demonstrates holding the instrument and the various strokes that will help you to play the Tombak - tom, bak, pleng miyan, éshâréh and riz (different techniques for drum rolls). This progressive course relies on learning two pieces from the repertoire of Master Hosein Tehrâni, composer and undisputed reference in the rebirth of the Tombak. In the course of learning the various parts of these suites, the student will master both the fundamental technique and the interpretation of the piece in 6/8 and the Fantasia suite composed by Master Tehrâni.
