Review of James D'Angelo's new CD The Holy City

For those who have worked with James D’Angelo in his popular Soundspirit courses, or read his two seminal books, this will bring a new dimension of understanding to his work.

Recorded at Washington National Cathedral as part of the New American Choral Music Series, The Holy City comprises the entire catalogue of the sacred music of James D’Angelo as composer. He is familiar with composing for a cathedral. A resident of Gloucester, he has created a close relationship with Gloucester Cathedral and its musical director Adrian Partington since 2009.

Three of his pieces have been commissioned and performed there including the Festival Fanfare for the opening of the 2013Three Choirs Festival. It is evident that he knows how to compose specifically for cathedral spaces. He allows for sustained voices to resonate and reverberate within the architecture of the cathedral as well as the cathedral of the listener’s body.

As I was listening my husband walked into the living room and as

The Danger of Unheard Sounds

The Danger of Unheard Sounds Seeing is believing, but a bizarre experiment revealed that people are affected by sound they cannot hear nor see. Scientists working at Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral analyzed the responses of 250 people who heard a 50 minute piano recital and also inaudible vibrations, too low in pitch for them to hear. The audiences emotions intensified as the inaudible sound vibrations were blasted out. Those feeling uncomfortable before the concert got increasingly angry. Theiremotion intensified during the piano performance. Others, who were initially happy, got progressively more joyful. Focused concentration on music has a mesmerizing effect, almost hypnotic. The surprising thing is that this is also true for inaudible sound. In experiments people felt physical affects from the silent blasts:tingling in the back of the neck and a strange feeling in the stomach.[1]This should not come as a surprise as many scientists confirmed harmful effectsfrom unhea

Feet Chakras

The feet chakras are where we connect with the energy of the Earth. The feet chakras need to be activated to allow the new energies to flow through our body into the Earth. The feet chakras are found in the hollow of the foot by the insteps. They need to be massaged regularly to activate them. I recommend at least ten minutes massage 2-3 times a week to begin with, then once a week to make sure they don’t get blocked. You can also use the weighted tuning forks on the feet chakras. After they have been activated you need to walk on the earth in bare feet for at least ten minutes day. The ten minutes walking needs to be on grass, rock or on a beach not in the house, on concrete, tarmac or paving slabs. If the feet chakras are blocked then there will be a build up of energy in our body that will cause us to become tired, anxious or unwell. People tend to get blocked feet chakras when life gets too much for them. When the feet chakras are blocked people will experience an

One Tree Among Many

The trees at Waterperry frame Art in Action, providing avenues, shade, and most of all keeping the wind down. The peaceful atmosphere amongst all the beauty we humans bring to it is totally held by the trees all around.
On the front lawn we are particularly graced by the huge fountain of life that is the Redwood. This tree is a perfect example of dynamic stillness, If you look at it from the outside it is all gently falling branches, twigs flowing down, needles all gently swaying. If you go inside and look at the trunk you get the opposite view. The this straight, powerful singular strength has such an upward rush it really can feel like you are standing within a fountain. In one sense you are?

Tons of water are raised up this trunk every day, tons of water cascade down these branches, carrying salts and starches out into these needles. And here the miracle is performed, photosynthesis changes these compounds into sugars and new starches. In as much as we do not really know how th

Tree character in sound

The character of each type of tree is clearly shown in the shapes, colours and movement of its leaves, bark, flowers etc. Acacia-Robinia for example has thorns on new growth, light yellow-green leaves and a shimmering movement in the lightest breezes.
This sparky character is seen also in the strangely yellow wood and its brittle character. Rot-resistant the timber has a you cant touch me attitiude to weather as its thorny twigs do to animals. When made into instruments these patterns of Acacias nature show up in the sound.
Shimmering overtones brighten each note, the sustain is long and full of dancing overtones. as can be heard in this clip: 445 Hermetic Bowl in Acacia Robinia
If you compare all this with Yew, what do you get?
Heres a clip of a 5 string Heart Bowl in Yew.
How does this sound compare? How do the patterns of Yew the tree relate to Yew as a musical instrument? We use a variety of local hardwood trees.

Story & Sound

Sound is one of the archetypal building blocks of the universe. Everything has its vibration, frequency, everything is in this sense a note. The simpler the element, the purer the note. So fine are some of these notes that when we look for the particle it appears not to be there, yet when we look away it is there again.
One of the conundrums of the physicist. Each element or ‘particle’ build up to create a larger particle, each atom builds a material element, each element combines with others to create a salt, adding note to note, building the song of creation, becoming the systems of the universe. Uni-verse, a short poem, poem of the One, the one verse, lyrics of the song of creation, describing the story so far.
Story, song, phrase, sound, diversity building intentional creation into simple frequency to create all that we know, all that we are. One day a man at home in his workshop conceives. Penetrated by the moment of in-breath, his imagination is assailed by inspiration and a

Unheard Whispers Secret Sounds Change our Physicality!

Unheard Whispers
Secret Sounds Change our Physicality!

Plants respond to music, growing better while listening to classical music, but how does sound change the physicality of the plant? In the book, The Secret Life of Plants, researchers hooked plants to machines resembling lie detectors, which revealed their response to threatening behavior. Wow! Plants possess an awareness of their well being and surroundings. Even more startling, the plants showed a response to their owner’s well-being, even if the owners were across the country. This seems like quantum entanglement (when two energies link on the quantum level, and effect another, even at long distances). Maybe the plants’ have emotions and care about their owners? read on

Does Your Name Define You? Ancient Civilizations May Hold the Answer

Does Your Name Define You? Ancient Civilizations May Hold the Answer
Ancient people used sound and music to heal, balance and uplift their worlds. One crucial way was to properly use the sound of one’s name. The sound of one’s name is a constant energy-influence for one’s entire life, because of the sheer number of times it is heard. In ancient times, how one said his name was crucial, as it described his energy to others.
They guarded against saying their name in combination with negative emotions, as these subtle energies intermingled. They would, however, say their name with love to uplift their subtle energy communication, or utter their name with the feeling of power to assert their authority...click to read on
