As we mentioned in our last newsletter, Sustainability and Healing our much-abused Planet will be the over-riding theme for our Sound Community in the coming months. To add the debate you may have noticed a new article on the BBC website with the title
"Cleaners 'worth more to society' than bankers - study". The research, carried out by think tank the New Economics Foundation, says hospital cleaners create £10 of value for every £1 they are paid. It claims bankers are a drain on the country because of the damage they caused to the global economy.
Sound Travels firmly believes that the Sound Travels Community of Soundworkers, made up of music therapists, sound healers, improvisers, sound workshop facilitators and musicians, has a very important role to play in humanity's next chapter as we all make adjustments through this period of turbulence. Sound workshops, events, seminars, and training all serve to support the need for healing, for life-change and for individual personal development which will become more and more pressing as we enter the next phase of the economic cycle. What the Sound Community gives in the form of life-energy will help redress some of the imbalances that world economy now has to address and correct.
So what do you think is the 'value' provided by 'Workers in Sound'? Can you help answer this vital question? This is a crucial time for this debate to be opened up. The past credit boom period put a clear and certain value on money and its acquisition ahead all other worthy endeavours. Music and sound have tacitly carried great importance as a binding force of human union and yet it often feels as if we have been the poor cousins to the so-called 'reality' of money-making and commercialism.
But - and it is a big 'but' - we all have to make a living and this includes the Community of Soundworkers. We have do this by advertising and marketing and we have to do it by competing for it in the same spaces that aggressive commercial organisations occupy, namely in traditional marketing media and on the internet. How should we compete and yet avoid the same pitfalls?
