The Setting and Experience
When you arrive for a sound bath session, you’ll typically be welcomed into a quiet, dimly lit space designed to create a calming atmosphere. This is not a must as sound baths can also take place during the day in well-lit places, or even outdoors. You’ll either lie down on a yoga mat or sit comfortably, often with blankets or cushions to help you fully relax. Once you’re settled in, you’ll be encouraged to close your eyes and let the sounds “wash” over you, hence the use of the word “bath”. The figurative idea is to immerse oneself in the vibrations of sound.
The session is led by a facilitator who uses a variety of instruments, such as metal singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, and chimes, each with its own unique quality of sound. These sounds are carefully played to create a dynamic sonic landscape, shifting in intensity and frequency throughout the session.
In these settings, my recommendation is to focus not only on listening to the instruments—it’s about feeling the vibrations resonate through your whole body, helping you enter a deeply meditative and relaxed state. We listen with the whole body, through the skin.
Ideally, a sound healing session is a safe, non-judgmental space where you can freely explore your emotions and thoughts. You may find yourself reflecting on certain feelings or memories, or simply enjoying a sense of peace and stillness. Everyone’s experience is unique.
