Your Healing Voice: Who Holds the Power?
In our exploration of sound, we often look to external instruments—bowls, gongs, or tuning forks—to find balance. However, as we dive into the second installment of our series with Ann-Marie Boudreau and Dr. Michelle Greenwell, we discover that the most sophisticated healing instrument in existence is one we carry with us everyday: the human voice.
The voice is far more than a tool forcommunication or entertainment; it is a bridge to deep personal transformation. For decades, Ann-Marie has witnessed this through "Vocal Play"workshops, improvisational circles, and her profound work at the bedside ofthose in palliative care. Her journey reveals that when we stop trying to"sound like someone else" and embrace our unique vocal fingerprint,we unlock a natural power to heal ourselves from the inside out.
Discovering the Healer Within
A central question in soundwork is: Whotruly holds the power? Is it the facilitator making the sound, the listenerreceiving it, or the person being healed? The answer is a beautiful paradox: weare our own natural healers. Our voice is our strongest healing tool because itcarries our unique consciousness.
This isn't just a spiritual theory; ithas visible physical biological effects. Ann-Marie recalls a time in hermid-50s when a Naturopathic Doctor examined her live blood samples under amicroscope. The doctor was stunned to see blood cells as active and vital assomeone a decade younger, eventually attributing this vitality to the fact thatAnn-Marie is a singer.
This aligns with the groundbreakingresearch of Fabien Maman, a founding father of vibrational soundtherapy. In the 1970s, Maman observed that the human voice had a dramaticeffect on human cells. In his clinical trials, he found that specific vocaltoning could cause cancer cells to disintegrate while simultaneously energizinghealthy cells. Maman believed that because the voice carries human intent, itpossesses a vibratory quality that physical instruments cannot replicate.
Intention, Frequency, and the "Life Current"
In the realm of sound healing, asimple formula governs the work: Intention + Frequency = Healing. * Intentis the energy and consciousness encoded into the sound.
- Frequency is the focused attention given to that intention.
When sounding for others, particularlyat the bedside in hospice care, Ann-Marie notes that an open heart naturallysoftens the voice. The emotion takes you to a place of compassion before themind even thinks a thought. This "heart-centered" sounding createswhat yogis call Prana, or the life current. This current manifeststhrough the breath and voice, touching every sense of the listener—eitherslowing the rhythm of blood circulation to bring peace or awakening the nervoussystem to provide strength.
This power extends even to the storieswe tell ourselves. The words we speak carry "weight" in the world. Bybeing discerning with our language and choosing words that reflect our truth,we influence our own energetic field. As ancient traditions suggest, we arecreators constantly singing our world into being.
The Path to the Embodied Voice
In modern culture, singing has oftenbecome an artificial form of entertainment where we sacrifice our naturalquality to mimic others. To return to a state of wellness, we must reclaim our"Embodied Voice." This journey often begins with the simplest ofacts:
The Power of Breath and Humming
Breath is the fuel for sound. In yogictraditions, different degrees of breath—from simple nostril breathing tointense "blowing"—are used to move energy. When we add sound to thatbreath, we "vitalize" the body. One of the most accessible ways tostart is through humming. Humming stimulates the vagus nerve, promotingrelaxation and mental clarity. It allows you to find your optimal vocalplacement without force, aligning your body to its essential life force.
Vocal Toning and Bija Mantras
For those looking to deepen theirpractice, Vocal Toning—the conscious elongation of vowel sounds—canrelease physical and energetic blocks. This is often done using Bija Mantras,or "seed sounds." These one-syllable sounds are designed to resonatewith the seven major chakras (energy centers) of the body:
- LAM (Root) – Stability and Grounding
- VAM (Sacral) – Creativity and Emotion
- RAM (Solar Plexus) – Power and Will
- YAM (Heart) – Love and Compassion
- HAM (Throat) – Expression and Truth
- SHAM (Third Eye) - Intuition
- OM (Crown) – Spiritual Connection
Whether sounded in a vocal circle orwhispered as a silent mantra within the mind, these sounds restructure ourmolecules. As Ann-Marie’s work in India taught her, the voice is a spiritualpath of growth where the whole body, mind, and spirit become the instrument.
