UK, GLOUCESTERSHIRE - The Life of the Virgin Mary, James D'Angelo, Blackfriars Monastery, Lady Bellegate Street, 31 Jul 2013
Der-Shin Hwang, soprano and James D'Angelo, piano will be performing the monumental song cycle and 20th century masterpiece The Life of the Virgin Mary with poems by Rainer Maria Rilke and music by Paul Hindemith. Glenn Gould has called the work "the greatest song cycle of the 20th century." It consists of 15 songs which will be sung in English translation, the first time in its history that it will be sung in English.
Der-Shin Hwang will provide a storyline along the way and the audiences will be given a copy of the translated poems.
James will also be giving a talk on the song cycle at the Three Choirs Festival venue, Blackfriars, on Tues. the 30th of July at 1:30pm.
Der-Shin and James will be giving four preview performances of the song cycle as follows:
