UK, LONDON - Bespoke training in Vocal Tai Chi, Jenni Roditi, The Loft, Crouch End, 25 Jan 2014

What is Vocal Tai Chi?

The music of Vocal Tai Chi starts from a spontaneous vocal drawing of an experience of the moment as it is expressed through voice. This is integrated with elementary Tai Chi that everyone can pick up quickly. Vocal Tai Chi encourages you to work with voice and the simplicity of Tai Chi to help inform an authentic improvised vocal singing. This can reveal layers of the voice inadvertently covered up by formal training and ideas of style. Jenni Roditi’s training and workshops use musical, physical and simple metaphysical practices that help release your voice and body effectively while encouraging you to sing freely. During this process transformational and artistic work can often take place. Jenni created this work out of her own singing in response to people requesting to learn Vocal Tai chi after hearing her perform.

Jenni Roditi GGSM, VMTR, MMus Dist., 21st Century Music. Creator, Vocal Tai Chi

Jenni studied composition and piano at the Guildhall School of Music where she then taught following her graduation. She was part of a team of teachers working with creative performance skills for classical musicians on the ‘Performance and Communication Skills’ programme. She ran community composition projects and facilitated improvisation classes for both undergraduates and postgraduates. During the nineties Jenni composed two full length operas, 'The Descent of Inanna' and 'Siddhartha Spirit Child' both commissioned by the ensemble Lontano. Recently she has revised ‘The Descent of Inanna’ for future production. A distinctive feature of both these operas is the use of singing styles across genres, the exploration of genres juxtaposed and improvisation within the score. Concurrently Jenni has run a private practice in Voice Movement Therapy and (more recently) Integral Voice. She worked with groups on Skyros Island for many years (at Atsista) as well as seeing clients one-to-one in London. All her work is informed by a long-term interest in composition, performance, Buddhism, psychotherapy, Tai Chi, visualization, and contemplative listening. In 1998 she completed the Foundation Training in Core Process Psychotherapy. She has just completed (2012) an MMus in composition at Brunel University. Jenni slowly matured her Vocal Tai Chi singing style through research into contemporary creative, indigenous and therapeutic voice work singing techniques over many years. Jenni has composed vocal music all her life and has learnt Tai Chi and Tibetan meditation.
