UK, LONDON - The Rose Above the Door - Rumi Concert with Coleman Barks & Chloe Goodchild, Chloe Goodchild, St James's Church, 197 Piccadilly, London W1J 9LL, 29 Jul 2013

Alternatives extends a huge welcome to Coleman Barks, who brings his acclaimed Rumi poems, to St James Piccadilly, for the first time. He is joined by international singer of the soul, Chloe Goodchild, founder of The Naked Voice.

Coleman and Chloë met in November 1997. They began recording their spoken-sung versions of Rumi’s poetry immediately. The album "There is Some Kiss We Want with Our Whole Lives" is a favourite Rumi collaboration with Coleman and Chloe, and acclaimed world musicians, David Darling, Glen Velez, Steve Gorn. They have shared their passion for Rumi with audiences in Canada, USA, UK and Ireland.

Coleman Barks' versions of the ecstatic poet, Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi, have made Rumi a best-selling poet in the USA today. They have spread like wildfire across the world. Come celebrate at this rare gathering, and discover the poetry and music of your soul.

"What was in that candle's light
that burned and consumed me so quickly?
Come back my friend.
The form of our love is not a created form.
There was a dawn I remember when my soul heard something from your soul
I drank water from your spring
and felt the current take me"
Rumi - Coleman Barks version

Coleman was born and raised in Tennessee, and today lives in Athens, Georgia and educated at the University of North Carolina and the University of California at Berkeley. He taught poetry and creative writing at the University of Georgia for thirty years. He is the author of numerous Rumi translations and has been a student of Sufism since 1977. His work with Rumi was the subject of an hour-long segment in Bill Moyers's Language of Life series on PBS, and he is a featured poet and translator in Bill Moyers's poetry special, "Fooling with Words."

Chloe has travelled the world, exploring a wide perspective on voice and sound, in search of “an embodied compassionate singing”. Deafness in childhood catalysed Chloë's fascination with inner sound and the singing voice as the most intimate vehicle for spirit, unhindered by the limitations of social conditioning. Chloë founded The Naked Voice after a transformative experience in northern India. The remarkable range and depth of Chloë's singing is powerfully demonstrated in her albums Devi, Grammy-nominated Sura and Fierce Wisdom, as well as on the CD single Singing Field. She has recorded and performed with Coleman Barks, poet-translator of The Essential Rumi, Eve Ensler of The Vagina Monologues and film director Jane Campion (The Piano, Holy Smoke).
