UK, PEMBROKESHIRE - Inviting the Muse : Singing and music-making with the drone, Stefan Cartwright, Penmeiddyn Manorowen Fishguard Pembrokeshire SA65 9QA, 23 Apr 2016
Using the Shruti Box, we will find out how the drone sound can support the natural singing voice, music-making and meditation and explore the drone as a creative source, a ground which we can draw from to express ourselves more freely and easily. We will encounter the Indian Raga, rhythm, and simple practices to integrate the whole body-mind instrument. The weekend is intended for anyone who has been touched by sound and music and wants to delve deeper, get fresh perspectives and play together with others in a relaxed space.
My approach is rooted in over 35 years of music-making, Yoga practice and experience working with individuals and groups. Drawing on perspectives from vocal pedagogy, Indian raga singing, group music improvisation, meditation, somatic movement, and the work of F.M. Alexander. Over these years, I've shared my work with many people in several countries, and in all kinds of ways.
I am also the developer of a simple musical instrument called the Shruti Box – a portable acoustic reed organ, which can be played by hand or foot, providing a rich drone accompaniment for singers and instrumental musicians.
