, School of Creative Music Making : Weekend 3 of 4 : Rhythm and Movement , Stefan Cartwright and Erik Huele, Hawkwood College, Stroud, Gloucestershire, 09 Sep 2011

Discover your own music with the School of Creative Music Making. Our 2011 course comprises four weekends, each with a different focus: Sound and Listening 1-3 April; The Voice and Harmony 10-12 June; Rhythm and Movement 9-11 September; Intuition and Musical Form 28-30 October.

In the third weekend of this year's course we focus on rhythm. When we allow ourselves
to feel a rhythm, to be moved by it and connect with its pulse, our playing takes on a
precise and vital quality, the music comes alive.

Playing together in both small and larger groups using percussive and other instruments
including the voice, we explore ways to tune into rhythm and use it within our music.
Instruments are provided and you are welcome to bring your own.

‘The focus was on enjoying making music rather than getting it "right". At the same time we were given structured rhythms to practise, but it all felt easy and fun with no pressure.” Sue B.

The weekends will help you find and cultivate your authentic musical voice and your ability to create music with others. The aim is to let your music flow. It doesn’t matter if you read music or have any prior training: the basis is listening. Sessions are centred around playing together in both small and larger groups.

The course is for beginners, experienced musicians and anyone interested in sound and
self-expression. A range of beautiful sounding, easy-to-use acoustic instruments is
provided and you are welcome to bring your own. Supportive movement and relaxation
practices are an integral part of the weekends.

The course is led by Stefan Cartwright and Erik Huele. Stefan is a musician and Yoga teacher whose primary instrument is the voice. His background includes performing and recording improvised music, instrument development and singing Indian Raga. Erik is a pianist-composer who also leads choirs and teaches Qi-Gong in his native Holland. He has a background in jazz and impressionist music and has recently recorded an album of Erik Satie compositions.

The venue, Hawkwood College is an early 19th century country house set in 42 acres of gardens, woods and fields. Situated in the South Cotswolds and with comfortable facilities, friendly staff and delicious wholesome food, it offers an ideal setting for creative education and peaceful retreat.
