, Silence Sounds and Spaces, Renzo Spiteri, John Moore Theatre, The King's School, Castle Place, Worcester, Worcestershire WR12LR, 29 May 2012
One of Malta’s foremost musicians Renzo Spiteri will be presenting his critically acclaimed contemporary world music performance at John Moore Theatre, The King's School, Worcester. Entitled Silence Sounds and Spaces, this solo performance is the result of a year-long project that gave Spiteri a unique opportunity to record his own compositions on site within the chambers of some of most prominent archaeological sites spread across the Maltese Islands, exploiting their unique natural sonic timbre. The music was released in 2011 as an audio CD that bears the same name, and the sonic quality of the sites is reproduced during the live performance through technological means. “The Neolithic sites of the Maltese Islands, the known and the unknown, chambers and spaces that vibrate and resonate so splendidly, have all been a major inspiration to me,” says Spiteri. “Silence Sounds and Spaces is about creating a painting in notes and sounds through a transparent and simple score and through the use of particular non-conventional instruments - including terracotta pots, stones and traditional clay drums. The music is a tapestry of sounds overlaying each other, weaving ideas together.” Throughout the multi-faceted and multi-instrumental live performance, this creative artiste employs an extraordinary world of sounds alongside powerful visuals of Malta’s stunning historic sites where time stands still. The result is an engaging audio-visual creation that draws listeners in to the artiste’s personal musical universe. Described by reviews as “an artiste who constantly surprises” (The Times) Renzo Spiteri’s artistic versatility and passion for the creative use of sound have over the years allowed him to develop fresh musical possibilities and unlimited modes of expression. He performs across a wide range of musical styles, from collaborative projects that undertake to bring together a wide range of musicians, to solo works where there is a spirit of enquiry. Spiteri’s artistic sensitivity and penchant for non-traditional approaches to composition have repeatedly resulted in innovative, inspiring and dynamic performances. Renzo Spiteri is an endorsed artiste for Toca Percussion, Paiste Cymbals, Yamaha Drums and Schlagwerk Percussion. Further information is available from www.renzospiteri.com
