After running his own specialist niche legal practice for nearly 20 years, where he was responsible for a number of significant and ground-breaking court cases (including most recently Matthew Fisher’s successful claim to a share of composition of the song Whiter Shade of Pale), Jens Hills moved into specialized Intellectual Property and commercial consultancy outside legal practice for a varied portfolio of clients. Further background can be obtained from his website jenshillslondon.com.
November 3rd: “Is copyright good for music?”
A brief presentation on the theme, followed by an open philosophical discussion about the relevance and future of creative rights protection weighing up the benefits of continued statutory regimes against trends such as “creative commons” and the academic argument that copyright should be scrapped altogether.
November 17th: “Dark matter in the universe of music rights”
This discussion will look at recent legal developments and their possible impact from a practical point of view on professional composers and musicians at work, as well as some anomalies and obscure technicalities in the realm of rights protection and exploitation.
December 1st: “I wish I’d been a troubabour…”
